Barbs et Arab-Barbs Breeders

Barb horse breeding is expanding rapidly.

The major goal of AFCB breeders is quality. They try to produce horses with good conformation and sound gaits while of course preserving type. Carefully chosen mating of the remaining stock in France with animals imported from the original breeding ground (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) is advisable to achieve that objective.

Riding horses and breeding stock of all ages are on sale by breeders that are AFCB members.

Please refer to " Elevages " for breeders address.
Dialing from abroad: withdraw "0", and add "00 33" (ex: 05 53 60 54 14 -> 00 33 5 53 60 54 14)

Breeding Programme

The programme is to be set up this year with the help of National Stud funds. Premiums are allocated to breeders who register their horse/s under the programme and take part in National Stud premium shows (SHF novice horse cycle in all disciplines and National Stud breed classes).
In 2006 to launch the programme, it has been agreed that breeders taking part shall pay only a symbolic amount (10€) to AFCB over and above their breeder membership fee whatever the number of horses they register under the programme. However horses are registered under the programme individually on a life-long basis, so please provide Isabelle BERTHELOT with a list of the animals you wish to register under the programme when you send in your membership fee.

INTRODUCTION

In line with the expectations of its supervisory bodies, AFCB offers a breeding programme. One aim of the programme is to offer selection objectives. Selective breeding may be based on:
- trueness to standard
- types
- character
- versatility
- particular athletic capabilities
The programme should be a means to collect information about breeding stock for the purposes of genetic improvement in connection with the breeding programme.

THE BARB BREED

(see breed standard)
Types: a scoring grid is being devised to provide a frame of reference.
2006 population:
Number of horses registered in the stud-book: 2495
Number of Barb stallions at stud: 40
Number of broodmares covered to produce Barb progeny: 173
Number of Barb foals born and reported alive: 122
The Barb horse and its multiple uses: an all-rounder – pleasure, endurance riding, dressage, show jumping, mounted orienteering, driving, instruction, equestrian demonstrations, etc.

THE BREEDING PROGRAMME

Expected consequences and outcomes:
1) To produce Barbs
2) To open the doors to SHF-endowed breed classes with premiums for breeders
3) Improve the quality of the stock and consolidate the Barb horse’s position in the horse trade
4) Be active in restoring an endangered breed

Resources implemented:
1) Support to breeders in breeding management and animal husbandry. Setting up of a breeding forum with contributions from veterinarians and authoritative judges.
2) Facilitating access to training (stallion handler, conformation and soundness, etc. )
3) Training in type judgment (AFCB)
4) Counselling during initial stud establishment, choice of breeding stock
5) Genotype selection:
- conformation, type and soundness classes
- establishment of a temper and sociability index (horse’s behaviour towards people and other horses )
- await performance ratings for competitive endurances, consider all performance ratings when giving advice on breeding for sports disciplines. Selection on these three points will lead to a classification of breeding stock (work ongoing for approved stallions and broodmares) and will be used as the basis for suggested mating choices.
- await authorization for covering by artificial insemination
6) Promotion and marketing
- catalogue of stallions, breeders’ directory
- development of international relations and exchanges
- aid for breeders to take part in national and international events
7) Undertaking a study for the characterization of Barb metabolism in competitive endurance and assessment of transmissibility

CONDITIONS FOR JOINING THE BREEDING PROGRAMME

To be a member of AFCB who pays breeder membership fee and breeding programme fee: 10€.
